Lesson Overview:
Each fifth grade class will:
- research one branch of the armed forces
- list the primary responsibilities
- locate the branch’s symbol(s) and discuss the meaning and significance
- find at least one hero and write a short paragraph or poem about the selected hero
- produce a class book for presentation at the school’s Veteran’s Day Celebration (include drawings, photographs, poems and essays)
Note: pre-teach book making and make a small scale sample prior to undertaking this project

Internet Research
Collaborate with social studies and computer teachers to allow ample time for research and discussion. (Collaboration is a must since elementary art teachers only see the children for approximately 45 minutes per week.)
- Develop a class bookmarking site (i.e. diigo, delicious, etc)
- Teacher provides links to appropriate search engines
- Divide class in to research groups to locate information for the assigned military branch:
- Primary responsibilities
- Symbol(s)
- Heroes
- Students locate sites with required information and complete a web page evaluation for each site.
- If the site has all of the required qualities the student should bookmark the site.
- Bookmark 1-2 websites.
Note to teacher: pre-teach vocabulary for Web Page evaluation & complete one as a class prior to having students complete individual or group research.
